Posted on July 11, 2021
Veteran music producer Paddy Man and singers Dr. Hilderman and Mesach Semakula are among the members who were appointed on the Uganda Musicians Association (UMA) Policy Board
Other members on the board are former Rubaga South MP and comedian Kato Lubwama, veteran singer Halima Namakula and talent manager Geoffrey Kayemba Ssolo.
The role of this board is to develop policy guidelines for the UMA leaders and their members as the association strives to become a professional body.
The development was announced at a meeting of the association leaders, stakeholders and music professionals that was held at UMA offices at National Theatre in Kampala recently.
The meeting that took place at the National theatre was attended by veteran musician Halima Namakula, UMA President Cindy Sanyu, Mawokota North MP Dr. Hilder Man, Bukomansimbi south MP Kayemba Solo to mention but a few.
After the appointment, Hilderman pledged that they are going to work with the association to make sure that it has a policy that the administrators and their members will follow.
“One of the policies is to bar musicians from being used by politicians for their own selfish motives. We are also tired of seeing artistes in State House for their personal gain instead of asking the President and his government to empower creative arts with the relevant laws to make the work of artistes more profitable,” He said
Talent manager and now MP for Bukomasimbi South, Kayemba Solo said they are going to use their influence in parliament to push for the copy right law because the lack of this law is the reason why Ugandan musicians are suffering as they have resorted to begging for handouts for a living during lockdown.
“I went to Nigeria a few years ago and spent two weeks there, I was with 2 Face Idibia and told me copy right is the reason why he made lots of money from his two songs African Queen and if love is a crime. It wasn’t producing a million songs with no copy right the way it is in Uganda,” He said.
The association will also have punishments for members that disobey the association rules and regulations.
Meanwhile, the appointment of the board comes in the days after Jose Chameleone’s formed what may be assumed as a parallel association to UMA called United Musicians Superstars Association
It should be noted that Chameleone founded UMA in 2017 and from that time he has not been so associated with it that much.
