James Odongo, a Ugandan rugby national team, Uganda Rugby 7s player went missing in Monaco, France
The team flew to France on 12th June 2021 take part in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Repechage Qualification tournament ahead of the main games in Tokyo, Japan.
Unfortunately, the team did not participate in the tournament because two of its members tested positive for Covid19 following mandatory screening.
Reports indicate that he went missing from his hotel room where the team had been put under isolation
This prompted their manager coach Tolbert Onyango to notify the Uganda Rugby Union in Kampala over the matter.
“James travelled on 16th June 2021 and on arrival they had to undergo a compulsory isolation in the designated tournament hotel. On completion of self-isolation on Saturday 19th June 2021, they were to undergo another Covid19 test at the venue outside the hotel, he did not turn up for the test and when the members returned to the hotel, he wasn’t in his room or hotel complex,” Read a statement released Uganda Rugby Union.
The Betway Kobs player is said to have disappeared with all his travel documents including a valid visa that expires on 26th June 2021.
This is not the first time African sports players have disappeared from their team members especially when they travel to Europe, USA and Australia.
In 2014 after the 2014 Commonwealth Games two players went missing after the event hosted in Glasgow, Scotland.
In 2015, two Ugandan sportsmen who vanished after the Commonwealth Games in Wales, Scotland.
Benon Kizza, 27, and Philip Pariyo, 26 disappeared in Glasgow after they failed to fly home to Uganda with the rest of the squad.
The Uganda government began an investigation into their disappearance after rumours that they were working at a car wash in Glasgow
But after claiming asylum, the pair – who had been in the African nation’s Sevens team – ended up in Cardiff in a hostel for asylum seekers.
In 2017 the trio of Ramathan Govule, Brian Kikaawa and Fred Odur went missing from the team’s hotel during an invitation tournament in Germany.
