Athlete Joshua Cheptegei who won a gold medal in the recently concluded Olympic Games 2020 that were held in Tokyo, Japan donated his medal to fellow athlete Stephen Kiprotich.
Cheptegei donated his medal to Kiprotich on 13th,August, 2021 a function where telecom giant MTN Uganda invited him alongside other winners including Peruth Chemtai who also won gold to officially give them cash prizes for their good performances in the games.
Cheptegei won a gold medal in the men’s 5,000 meters finals and silver in the men’s 10000 meters finals, Peruth Chemutai won gold in the women’s 3000 meters finals whereas Jacob Kiplimo won bronze in the men’s 10,000 meters final.
Speaking at the event where MTN handed them cash prizes worth Ug Shs 135 million, Cheptegei said he donated his medal to Kiprotich because it is him that inspired him to be a star
“I give away my medal to him because I respect him and he me a lot when I was still an amateur athlete,” he said.
The money that MTN gave these athletes included Shs 50 million each for gold winners Peruth Chemutai and Joshua Cheptegei.
Cheptegei also got another Shs 25 million for the silver medal and Jacob Kiplimo got Shs 10 million for his bronze medal at the games.
He also gave away part of his 75 million cash prize money received from MTN to fellow athletes.

Dominic Otuchet, the Uganda Athletics Federation president applauded the telecom company for sponsoring them since 2004.
